Wereldwijd 3,892,179,868,480,350,000,000 bits digitale informatie gecreëerd in 2008

Digitale universum neemt sneller toe dan verwacht ondanks de economische teruggang

Nieuwegein, 18 mei 2009 – In 2008 is er wereldwijd 3,892,179,868,480,350,000,000 bits (487 miljard gigabytes) aan digitale informatie geproduceerd, zo blijkt uit onderzoek van EMC, marktleider in informatie-infrastructuuroplossingen, uitgevoerd door IDC. Dit komt overeen met 19 miljard volledig gevulde Blu-ray dvd’s, 30 miljard gevulde Apple iPods (grootste iPod Touch) of 162 triljoen digitale foto’s. Ondanks de economische teruggang is de hoeveelheid digitale informatie daarmee boven verwachting toegenomen. Het digitale universum (de totale hoeveelheid digitale informatie) zal, zo verwacht IDC, elke anderhalf jaar in verdubbelen. Zo zullen we in 2012 vijf maal meer informatie produceren dan in 2008.

Uitdaging voor het bedrijfsleven

Terwijl de groei van de hoeveelheid digitale informatie in snelheid alleen maar toenam, daalde IT budgetten waardoor het beheren van al deze informatie een nog grotere uitdaging wordt voor organisaties. De vraag naar geavanceerde technieken en tools (virtualisatie, deduplicatie die etc) die bedrijven helpen meer te beheren tegen lagere kosten wordt hierdoor nog sterker. Eelco Kalff, Country Manager van EMC Nederland over de resultaten: ”student, directeur of dokter, allemaal ervaren we in onze dagelijkse bezigheden komen we iedere dag in aanraking met de toename van digitale informatie. Terwijl 70 procent van al deze informatie door individuen wordt gecreëerd, is ruim 85 procent van al deze informatie direct of indirect de verantwoordelijkheid van bedrijven en organisaties. Er wordt dan ook veel geïnvesteerd in nieuwe technieken en methoden om deze informatie op een slimme manier te beheren op te slaan en te beveiligen.”

Enkele opvallende resultaten uit het onderzoek:

De komende 4 jaar komen er wereldwijd 600 miljoen internetgebruikers bij en zal het aantal mensen dat mobiel internet gebruikt verdrievoudigen. Twee derde van alle internetgebruikers maakt in ieder geval af en toe gebruik van mobiele toepassingen.
Het aantal interacties via e-mail, instant messenger, twitter en sociale netwerken zal de komende 4 jaar verachtvoudigen.
In 2012 zullen 850 miljoen mensen online producten en diensten kopen en aanbieden, dit is een verdubbeling van de commercie die nu online plaatsvindt. De totale omzet in 2012 bedraagt $13 triljoen, waarvan een groot deel bestaat uit handel tussen bedrijven onderling.
De pogingen om de wereldwijde economie te stimuleren zorgen voor een aanzienlijke toename van het digitale universum. Zo krijgen er meer mensen toegang tot breedband, elektronische patiëntendossiers worden ingevoerd en de invloed van IT bij de ontwikkeling van ‘slimmere’ auto’s en huizen neemt toe.

Meer beveiliging nodig

Ook het aandeel van ‘compliance gevoelige’ informatie, die informatie die aan wetten, reguleringen en richtlijnen dient te voldoen neemt toe. Van 25 procent eind 2008 naar 35 procent in 2012.
De financiële crisis zal tot meer regulering leiden waardoor banken en andere organisaties nog meer financiële informatie direct opvraagbaar dienen te archiveren.
